How Do You Make Homemade Chili?

You’ll find the step-by-step recipe below —here is a short overview of the steps when you make homemade chili:

  1. Cook the beef and the onion.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, then bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and let simmer for 15 minutes.

How Long Does Homemade Chili Last In the Fridge?

Chili will last for about four days if you store it properly. Transfer the cooled chili to an airtight container, then store it in the refrigerator. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave. Or you can freeze your leftover chili into one or two person meal sizes. This is a great option if you know you have a busy week and want something homemade when the time to cook is tight.

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 8-10 servings

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 (15 ounce) can kidney beans
  • 2 (15 ounce) can pinto beans
  • 3 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 quart (24 ounce) can tomato puree/juice ( I used a quart jar of homemade tomato sauce that was runny)
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 2 tsp oregano and salt
  • 1 tsp paprika and pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Directions

  1. Combine ground beef and onion in a large saucepan over medium heat; stir until meat is brown and onion is tender, 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Stir in tomato sauce, kidney beans, pinto beans and tomato puree. Add all the seasonings. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover and let simmer, about 15 minutes.
  3. This recipe is great to enjoy right away, but it’s also amazing the next day!
  4. Optional toppings that are loved by some of our family members, cheddar cheese and corn tortilla chips (Fritos) along with a piece of homemade bread with peanut butter.
  5. Don’t be afraid to adjust the seasonings to your liking.
  6. Enjoy!
