I always have littles with and I didn’t want any accidents to happen, especially while I’m trying to learn something new.
That is what led me to MELT & POUR SOAP bases.

This class will give you the basics and will even include a FREE Downloadable Guide with recipes to get you started.
I had been wanting to try soap for a while. I even had the goat milk in the freezer and lye purchased but I got concerned. You see we always have littles running around and I was worried that someone would get hurt while I was learning . So I put the things away and started to learn about melt and pour soap bases.
Melt and pour soap bases are perfect to make with kids because the lye is already mixed in and safe for everyone to use.
Lye is needed to make any soap bar, but that part is already done for you when you buy a melt and pour base.
My favorite soap bases to use is goat milk but other great options include shea butter, aloe vera, glycerin, coconut milk, or honey soap bases. It really depends on your skin type and preferences for which one you choose to use.
Here’s some different qualities of the different melt and pour soap bases.
A goat milk soap base will make a very creamy traditional soap bar.
Shea butter soap base is very moisturizing and will not clog pores. Aloe vera is very moisturizing and can relieve dry, itchy skin. It can soothe burns, cuts, and other skin imperfections.Glycerin soap bases make a clear soap bar and are fun to use with dried flowers Coconut milk soap base is an excellent option for sensitive skin.
The options are about endless when it comes to adding scents and flowers to your soaps. Some of our favorites are calendula, honey and oat, turmeric and honey, charcoal and lemon, coffee and vanilla and French green clay and R.C.
Over the years I have used different tools and supplies .
Here is a list of my favorites and some links to find them.
Essential Oils – Friends Quality is Quality. Ever since Matthew had an reaction I have sought after high grade products. If I’m going to spend the time making these bath products I want to make sure they are safe for our families bodies.
That is why I use Young Living Products. The standard they have for the oils (and other products they offer) is the best. https://bit.ly/Juliesoillist
More on Young Living discounts and special offers in the post
Melt and Pour Soap- I tend to use Goat Milk Melt and Pour Soap Bases. Really any would work, I just like the creaminess the goat milk offers. https://bit.ly/MeltandpourSoap
Soap Molds – I started out with the loaf style soap molds but over time have switched to the silicone 6- cavities styles. I like that I don’t have to try and cut my bars straight and even (it wasn’t working out too well for me ). https://bit.ly/Soapmolds
Mixing Supplies – I like to use glass containers as much as possible, it makes cleaning easier and doesn’t hold onto the smell of the EOs I used from the batch before.
Double boiler, or pan and glass bowl works just as well.
The melt and pour soap we are using for this class will be Charcoal and Lemon.
*Save the recipe for the future!*

Step one is to weigh out your soap and cut into small cubes.

I like to buy 5 pound blocks of melt and pour soap base.
To fill the 6 silicone mold you will need 1 pound 10 ounces.
Once you have them cut them up you can place the cubes in a double boiler over medium heat, heat until melted.
After the soap is melted, carefully remove from heat and add in the rest of the ingredients.
Stir well.
This is where you can have a lot of fun trying different scents and flowers.
I would not recommend using lavender on this application. The dried flowers will turn an unsightly color and you will have regrets. Trust me , I learned the hard way .
In this recipe ( Charcoal and Lemon)
I used 3 tablespoons of activated charcoal and
35-40 drops of Lemon Essential oils.
This was a very faint scent. If you want a stronger scent maybe try 45-50 drops.
In the photo this was almost all the way incorporated .

I did have to stir a little more to get it fully mixed in.
Pour into soap molds.

I like to use a 2/3 – 1 cup measurer when I’m filling the cavities of the soap mold.
Pop-out of molds once they are completely hardened, about 24 hours.
If I want to make more soap then I have molds for I will pop the soap out after 45 min- 1 hr.

I usually get to make a lot at one time. Since I have a mess it just makes sense to do a lot, then I only have to make soap for our family 1-2 times a year.
When I take them out of the molds I like to stand them up and give them space between each bar. That way they can dry well and not stick together.

Now you have made some beautiful soap!
Wasn’t that easy peasy
Here comes the fun part.

I hope you enjoyed this simple, beginners class. The purpose was to get your feet wet, and rip the bandage off, so to speak. I have let the “unknown” slow me down. Most of the time, once I buckled down and started , it wasn’t so hard .
I also wanted to share a resource I have put together, A Beginners Guide to Bath and Body Products. It’s a free download with recipes for soaps salves and more!
